What is ECMINT?
ECMINT is a 2-year program for trainees in interventional neuroradiology and endovascular neurosurgery. The Course is currently in its fifth cycle. The Course is comprehensive and its curriculum is compliant with the requirements of the European Training Requirements in Internventional Neuroradiology published by the UEMS division of Neuroradiology. It provides a theoretical education in all the components needed to practice neurointerventions.
The teaching is conducted by an international faculty in four 5-day courses over two years. The in-person courses are held at St Anne’s College, Oxford (UK). Students are not obliged to complete all four courses in sequence. Historically, each course has been accredited for CME by UEMS-EACCME. ESMINT, in cooperation with EBNI, undertakes certification of students completing the course.
An intense theoretical training in interventional neuroradiology
Delegates attend the course not only from Europe and the UK, but also from the rest of the world. ECMINT students come not only from specialist neuroradiology training, but also from neurosurgery, neurology, and occasionally cardiology training, all wishing to receive training in neurointerventions.
Each cycle comprises four courses over two years. Each course lasts 5 days and consists in an intense schedule of lectures and small group tutorials.
During each course there are two self-administered quizzes and a web-based final test on the last day of the course under exam conditions.
Topics covered in the ECMINT curriculum
The course covers embryology, neuroanatomy, vascular anatomy, neuroimaging, clinical neuroscience, pharmacology, haematology, bioengineering, natural history and pathophysiology of neurovascular disease and management including critical care – all delivered by experts in their field from all over Europe and the UK.
Much of the theoretical knowledge outlined by the European Board in Neurointervention (EBNI) in their recommendations for acquiring competence in neurointerventions, is covered in this two-year course.
- Course 1: main theme: skull base disease including arteriovenous dural fistulas, vascular skull base tumors and venous disease.
- Course 2: main theme: aneurysms, subarachnoid haemorrhage and delayed cerebral ischemia
- Course 3: main theme: ischaemic stroke
- Course 4: main theme: brain and spinal vascular malformations
How is the teaching delivered?
The lectures provide a comprehensive, up-to-date overview delivered by our experts.
Small group tutorials promote stimulating delegate/expert discussion and interaction, and enthusiastic participation encourages the development of professional relationships.
Quizzes/tests further enhance and reinforce knowledge and are facilitated by comprehensive, up-to-date reading lists sent in advance of the course.
A web-based test is held on the final day of each course under examination conditions.
ECMINT is endorsed by EBNI.
EDNI: European Diploma in Neurointervention
ESMINT offers a formal Diploma that represents a theoretical qualification in neurointerventional therapy: the European Diploma in Neurointervention (EDNI).
To be eligible to sit the EDNI examinations, candidates must have completed a full cycle of ECMINT and achieved an average pass mark of 60% or more in all four end of course tests.
The EDNI consists in (i) a written exam, normally in April and (ii) an oral exam, normally just before the ESMINT Congress in September. Only those who pass the written exam may register for the oral.
Successful participants are awarded the European Diploma in Neurointervention and are invited to receive their Diploma at the ESMINT Congress in September.
