About Marseille

Marseille, set on the Mediterranean coast, is the second-largest city in France, and also the oldest one, its foundation by Greek merchants dating back to 600 BC. It has been an important European trading centre and remains France’s largest port for commerce, freight and cruise ships. It offers numerous cultural, architectural and artistic sights, spanning the 26 centuries of its history. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2013 and European Capital of Sport in 2017 and will host the 2024 Sailing Olympic and Paralympic Games. Marseille is surrounded by a mountainous coastal area, which includes the nearby Calanques National Park, and is known for its 300 days of sunshine per year.
