The European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2025 in Helsinki marked an important occasion for ESMINT to actively contribute to the scientific programme, hands-on training, and community exchange.
These activities underscored our shared commitment with ESO to advancing stroke care across Europe and beyond.
Joint ESO–ESMINT Session: Tackling the Real-World Challenges of Thrombectomy
One of the scientific highlights was the joint ESO–ESMINT session titled “Improving thrombectomy beyond recanalization times: complications, hurdles and solutions.” This session brought together leading neurointerventionalists and stroke neurologists to discuss critical challenges that persist even after successful vessel recanalization.
The session featured a strong lineup of expert talks: Jens Fiehler (Hamburg, Germany) opened with insights on the role of technical innovations for endovascular stroke treatment. Helena I. De Sousa Guerreiro (Hamburg, Germany) followed with a discussion on complications during rescue stenting and angioplasty. Julien Allard (Paris, France) addressed the delicate balance between re-occlusion and hemorrhage when using antithrombotics after emergency intracranial stenting.
Anne Christine Januel (Toulouse, France) presented different models of mechanical thrombectomy services across Europe, highlighting opportunities to increase access to endovascular therapy. Violiza Inoa (Memphis, United States) concluded with a compelling report on thrombectomy workshop experiences in low- to middle-income countries.
Together, these presentations showcased the diversity of challenges and solutions in thrombectomy practice and emphasised the need for global knowledge exchange and continuous innovation.
ESO–ESMINT Hands-on Workshops on Thrombectomy
Continuing our mission to provide high-impact education, ESMINT collaborated with ESO to organize hands-on thrombectomy workshops at ESOC. Held on Thursday, 16 May 2025, these workshops offered both basic and advanced modules across four sessions.
Designed specifically for neurointerventionalists and neurologists involved in stroke care, the sessions provided a unique opportunity to work with simulators and gain practical insights into thrombectomy techniques. The response was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the value of combining theory with tactile learning experiences.
ESMINT Table at ESOC
Throughout the congress, the ESMINT table in the exhibition area proved to be more than just an information point – it became a lively hub of exchange, networking, and community building. Members, long-standing colleagues, and new faces alike stopped by to connect with the ESMINT team, engage in meaningful conversations, and learn more about what ESMINT offers.
Visitors could explore ESMINT’s growing portfolio of educational programmes such as ECMINT, EXMINT and the e-/ and fellowship programmes, as well as our upcoming congress, research grants, and collaborative initiatives. Many took the opportunity to ask about membership benefits – including discounted congress fees, CME access, and exclusive learning resources.
The table also served as a place to gather feedback, listen to ideas, and strengthen the relationship between ESMINT and its multidisciplinary community. These face-to-face interactions are an essential part of what makes events like ESOC so valuable – creating space not only for knowledge sharing but for shaping the future of the neurointerventional field together.
A Stronger Community Through Collaboration
ESMINT’s active presence at ESOC 2025 reflects our dedication to connecting disciplines, fostering education, and advancing patient care in neurointervention. Events like these are a powerful reminder that impactful progress in stroke treatment is only possible through shared expertise and collaboration.
Looking Ahead: ESOC 2026 in Maastricht
After the success of ESOC 2025, we’re already looking forward to the next edition: ESOC 2026, taking place in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The congress will be led by Prof. Dr. Wim van Zwam – Chair of the EXMINT Committee. We’re excited to continue our collaboration with ESO and contribute to what promises to be another exceptional event.
We thank all who participated, engaged, and supported our activities at ESOC 2025 – and we look forward to many more shared initiatives with ESO in the future.
