ESMINT Congress – At a glance
The ESMINT Congress 2020 brought together the world of neurointerventions:
- Scientific Presentations
- Joint Sessions
- Delegate Cases
- Virtual Exhibition
- ESMINT’s got talent
- Special Lectures
As we’ve monitored the trajectory of COVID-19 cases and local restrictions and throughout the world, we’ve decided to hold the ESMINT 2020 congress as an exclusively virtual event. The ESMINT Congress was held September 9–10, and was a little shorter than the traditional in-person event.
This was not an easy decision to make, but your health, safety, and welfare are of the utmost importance to us. A virtual ESMINT Congress will ensure broad participation for all those who want to attend, especially individuals whose institutions have travel bans. The virtual ESMINT Congress included a live component and on-demand components beyond the dates of the Clinical Congress.

Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) has grown steadily over the years and was boosted by the recent addition of acute ischemic stroke treatment to its work field. This expansion attracted, and also required, new players, some from different backgrounds than the ‘standard’ INRs.
In order to retain the high standards, which had always been a hallmark of INR, proper education and certification are much needed. ESMINT has developed several initiatives to meet this need by developing educational cycles for INR, the ECMINT courses, and more recently, the shorter EXMINT cycle for endovascular acute stroke interventions. Quality criteria and guidelines for training have been written in collaboration with other societies and the European Board of Neuro Intervention (EBNI) has been installed for certification of INRs.
But more needs to be done: Training centers should be selected and audited so trainees can be assured of high-quality training and guidance. Ideally one harmonized training and certification program for INR in Europe should be developed in collaboration with other European societies, like ESO, ESNR, CIRSE, and EANS.
The ESMINT Congress offers an ideal opportunity to bring members from the various societies together to share and discuss experiences and initiatives in educating physicians. And also to discuss ways to educate and train the essential paramedical teams, indispensable for our quality health care services.
The theme of this 12th ESMINT Congress is: Education.
But of course traditional components of the congress like case discussions, trial updates and morbidity and mortality will have its place in the congress, as well as the parallel sessions for technicians and for young physicians. A scientific session will be added this year; accepted abstracts will be published in JNIS.
I cordially invite you from 9 to 10 September 2020 to share your thoughts, participate in the discussions and enjoy the as always vibrant atmosphere of the ESMINT congress.
Prof. Wim van Zwam, Congress President
Congress Committee Board
The 12th ESMINT Congress highlights the following main topics:
Education: training and certification of INRs
Regional and national differences in INR
Modern communication (social media)

About the annual ESMINT Congresses
The annual ESMINT Congress is growing year by year. The goal of the conference is to facilitate interdisciplinary discussions between interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, and scientists. These discussions refer to indications, strategies, techniques, complications, and morbi-mortality in vascular interventional neuroradiology, endovascular neurosurgery, and vascular neurology.
Moreover, the annual ESMINT Congress is to provide information on new technologies and practices. Attendees also receive the results from studies, both ongoing and completed.
Additionally, we wish to stimulate debates and controversial opinions based on case discussions, operators’ experience and the results of most recent studies.
The ESMINT Congress is a conference on interventional neuroradiology and endovascular neurosurgery. It has a strong focus on education as many ESMINT training activities. Usually, parts of the programme are compiled with partner societies with an overlapping interest in interventional neuroradiology and endovascular neurosurgery.
GET INVOLVED! ESMINT is not a typical formal congress. Send us your ideas for subjects you would like us to cover and help us design the program. We want this meeting to open our minds, enlarge our knowledge and eventually influence our practice.
